KUALA LUMPUR, June 2 (Bernama) — The Sunway University Cheerleading Team will represent Malaysia at the prestigious 2026 FISU World University Championship in Cheerleading in Gothenburg, Sweden from June 5 to 7.
Sunway University said that the historic participation marks a defining milestone for Malaysian university sports and cheerleading, as the university’s cheerleading team proudly carries the Jalur Gemilang onto the global stage for the first time in the championship’s history.
“Representing Malaysia, the team will compete alongside student athletes from universities across the world in a vibrant celebration of athletic excellence, passion, teamwork and cultural diversity,” the university said in a statement today.
To commemorate the team’s historic participation, the university recently held a special send-off ceremony on campus, bringing together university leaders, students, staff, and supporters to wish the athletes success as they prepare for the tournament.
Organised by the Swedish University Sports Federation, Swedish Cheerleading Federation and Gothenburg & Co, the championship reflects the core values championed by the International University Sports Federation – excellence, passion, and team spirit – while showcasing the academic and cultural diversity represented by participating institutions from across the globe.
Sunway University Cheerleading Team president Nicholas Low Kah Hung said the team was proud and excited to represent Malaysia.
“We will strive to give our very best and make our country proud on the international stage. We would also like to thank Sunway University for its continuous support throughout our journey,” he said.
He added that the opportunity would allow them to showcase the spirit, dedication, and teamwork of Malaysian student-athletes while carrying the national flag with pride.
Meanwhile Sunway Education Group Chief Executive Officer Prof Datuk Elizabeth Lee noted that it was a defining moment for Malaysia and for Sunway University.
“This opportunity for our cheerleading team to represent the nation at the international stage speaks to the remarkable talent, resilience and determination of our Sunway students and we wish them all the very best in Gothenburg,” she said.
Sunway University also emphasised that it remains committed to nurturing well rounded graduates who excel beyond academics by empowering students through opportunities in leadership, sports, innovation, and global engagement.
“The team’s participation further highlights Malaysia’s growing presence in international university sports while inspiring future generations of Malaysian student athletes to pursue excellence and global opportunities with confidence and ambition,” the university added..
