ISTANBUL, Jan 2 (Bernama-Anadolu) — At least 10 people have died in a diarrhoea outbreak caused by contaminated water in Indore, the commercial capital of the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava said on Friday, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported.
Residents claim that 14 people, including an infant, have died as a result of the diarrhoea outbreak, according to the Press Trust of India. Authorities have not confirmed the higher figure.
Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr Madhav Prasad Hasani said on Thursday that laboratory tests showed the locality’s drinking water had been contaminated due to a leak in a pipeline.
The leakage was discovered in a main drinking water supply pipeline at a site where a toilet had been constructed, leading to contamination of the water supply, according to officials.
Over 1,400 people in the Bhagirathpura area have suffered from vomiting and diarrhoea over the past nine days.
As of Thursday night, a health department official said 272 patients had been admitted to hospitals. Of the 201 patients still hospitalised, 32 are under treatment in intensive care units.
Indore has been declared India’s cleanest city for eight consecutive years, in 2025, according to NDTV.
