Norway’s Crown Princess Needs Lung Transplant

OSLO, Dec 19: Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit, 52, needs a new lung, the Norwegian royal household said on Friday.

Her condition, stemming from chronic lung disease, has deteriorated in recent months to such an extent that a lung transplant is now the necessary next step, according to a statement.

When Mette-Marit will be placed on the waiting list for a lung transplant has not yet been determined, her doctor, Are Martin Holm, said.

“I had always hoped that we could keep the disease in check with medication,” Mette-Marit told the television broadcaster NRK in an interview. She said her condition had worsened faster than she and her doctors had hoped.

A rare form of pulmonary fibrosis, a chronic lung disease, was diagnosed in Mette-Marit seven years ago. She made the illness public in October 2018.

The disease can cause shortness of breath, which is why the princess has repeatedly had to cancel official engagements.
