SEA Games: Muhammad Sharul Aimy, Kang Xian Strike Gold In Artistic Gymnastics


BANGKOK, Dec 12 (Bernama) — Three-time South East Asian (SEA) Games bronze medalist Muhammad Sharul Aimy Kamaru Hisam could hardly find the words to express his delight in finally winning his first-ever gold medal in Pathum Thani today.

Muhammad Sharul Aimy, who won the gold in the men’s vault with 13.833 points in the final at Gynmasium 5, Universiti Thammasat Kampus Rangsit, said he was inspired to do better by his teammate Luqman Al Hafiz Zulfa managed to win a silver medal in the men’s floor exercise yesterday, surpassing his horizontal bar medal in the previous SEA Games in Cambodia.

“I was really very happy when I saw other friends like Luqman swapping the colour of his medals, so I managed to swap my bronze with a gold.

“I hope my win today can motivate me to do the same at next year’s Asian Games and also the 2026 Commonwealth Games as I have only been a finalist in Birmingham 2022,” he told reporters here today, after beating John Ivan Cruz, who won the silver with 13.817 points, and bronze medalist Tikumporn Surintornta  (13.717 points).

Meanwhile, Yeap Kang Xian was beside herself with joy after winning the gold in the women’s balance beam with 13 points, ahead of Singaporean Amanda Yap (12.733 points) and Aleah Finnegan of the Philippines (12.467 points)

“I am really happy. Thank you, National Sports Council and the National Sports Institute for helping and supporting me all this while,” she said.

The national gynmastics team ended their SEA Games campaign with three gold medals, a silver and two bronze medals.
