KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 24 (Bernama) — The flood situation in several states in the country has taken a turn for the worse in several states, with the number of evacuees rising in Kelantan, Perak, Selangor, Kedah and Perlis.
In KELANTAN, there are 9,882 evacuees from 3,608 families at 40 relief centres in four districts – Kota Bharu, Tumpat, Bachok and Pasir Puteh – tonight compared to 9,634 evacuees this afternoon while the water level of Sungai Golok had exceeded the alert level at two locations – 7.68 metres (m) in Bachok, above the alert level of seven metres, and in Rantau Panjang, at 7.81 m.
In PERLIS, the number of evacuees rose to 2,017 people from 594 families at nine relief centres tonight from 1,497 people this afternoon, with all of them being residents in the areas of Kangar, Arau and Padang Besar.
In SELANGOR, the number of evacuees rose to 1,732 peole from 474 families as of 8.30 pm compared to 327 people previously, and the number of relief centres opened rose to 15 from eight at 3.30 pm.
The newly opened centres are Sekolah Rendah Agama Dusun Nanding, Kompleks Penghulu Batu 10, Balai Raya Kampung Melaka, Batu 9, all in Hulu Langat district along with SK Shah Alam, Seksyen 16, and SK Desa Aman, Kuala Selangor.
Eight rivers have exceeded their danger levels, Sungai Langat, Batu 12 in Hulu Langat at 42.4 m, Sungai Langat, in Jenderam Hilir (11.55 m), Sungai Bernam, in Hulu Selangor (20.29 m) and Sungai Binjai, in Meru (4.64 m).
Meanwhile in PERAK, the number of evacuees rose to 1,786 people from 554 families at 20 relief centres in Manjung, Perak Tengah, Hilir Perak as well as Larut, Matang and Selama tonight compared to 1,415 people from this afternoon.
Manjung has the highest number of evacuees, 996 people from 294 families in 12 centres, followed by Perak Tengah (643 people from 219 families, six centres), Larut, Matang and Selama (38 evacuees from 11 families, one centre) and Hilir Perak (109 people from 30 families, one centre).
Di KEDAH, there are 1,088 people from 344 families from Kulim and Kubang Pasu being housed in nine centres as of 8 pm, while four rivers have exceeded their danger levels, Sungai Laka in Kubang Pasu (23.47 m); Sungai Sintok in Kubang Pasu (44.59m), Sungai Titi Kerbau in Pendang (4.14m) and Sungai Sari di Padang Terap (28.82m), with three more rivers at warning levels, Sungai Perik in Padang Terap (13.92m), Sungai Melaka in Langkawi (3.39m) and Sungai Bata in Kubang Pasu (8.93m).
In TERENGGANU, the number of evacuees dropped to 129 people from 53 families in SK Kuala Besut, Besut as of 8 pm compared to 205 people from 76 families as of 3 pm, while in PENANG, there are 385 evacuees from 103 families in four centres tonight compared to 404 people from 104 families this afternoon.
SK Lahar Yooi in North Seberang Perai has the highest number of evacuees at 172 people from 49 families, followed by Desa Puri evacuation centre with 107 people from 28 families, SK Pengkalan Jaya (56 people from 15 families) and SK Permatang Pasir in Central Seberang Perai (50 people from 11 families).
