Alyson Ng: Ballet Helps Contribute To My Confidence and Poise

Alyson Ng Shu Qing, 14, started taking ballet lessons at the age of five at the encouragement of both her parents.

Somehow, she quit after some time when it dawned on her that ballet was rather boring with the strict routines associated with the dance. That was then.

But after some time, she came back to resume her lessons despite knowing that she needed to sacrifice a lot of time and follow the rigours of the dance discipline.

Today, she has found ballet to be rather useful in her life in terms of contributing to her self-confidence and poise.

Alyson is now at the intermediate and pre-advanced levels and trains twice a week at a ballet centre after having started with Classical Ballet, the foundation of all ballet training, where she learnt about the emphasis on posture, turnout, and precise techniques.

She has now gone on to focus on Neoclassical Ballet, which is a blend of classical techniques with modern, abstract choreography.

Another bonus of her ballet lessons is the opportunity to perform with self-assurance and faith at her church weekly.

“It makes me feel good that I can contribute to my church as I perform with church-goers of around my age,” said Alyson, a recipient of three gold medals, a Star Award, and a Top Scorer (Solo) for the Pre-Junior title.
