GEORGE TOWN, Nov 7: Cruise ship ‘Discovery Princess’, with 3,837 passengers and crew, made its maiden call at the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT) at Penang Port here and generated approximately US$383,700 or RM1.6 million to Penang.

Penang Port Commission (SPPP) chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin said this was based on a conservative estimate of direct expenditure of US$100 per person.

“This immediate economic injection directly benefits local businesses across hospitality, retail, transport, food and beverage, and tourism services, putting revenue into the hands of taxi drivers, stall owners, tour guides, hoteliers and artisans across Penang.

“This milestone not only underscores Penang’s growing appeal to international cruise lines but also represents an important step in the recovery of the state’s tourism sector and the continued development of its maritime industry,” he said in a statement today.
