Kapit Undergoes Modernisation to be a World-Class Green & Pedestrian-Friendly City Over the Next Few Years

KAPIT, Nov 6: The rapid development being implemented by the Sarawak government is expected to transform Kapit into a modern inland town within the next five to 10 years, said Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said the development plan for Kapit has been designed comprehensively, covering water and electricity supply, road construction, resettlement, and socioeconomic development for the people.

“Kapit will become a ‘New Inland Modern Township’ in five to 10 years. We have implemented all the plans in accordance with the state development strategy,” he said at the Merarau ceremony with the Kapit community here today.

Abang Johari said the state government has approved an allocation of RM1.96 billion to supply treated water to Kapit, including additional funding for a new electricity supply system using advanced technology to expand energy coverage in the interior areas.

Apart from that, he said, the state has also approved the construction and upgrading of several main road networks and feeder roads, including the Belaga-Bakun access road project and the construction of jetties to support economic development and recreational activities in the area.

He also announced the RM122-million Jalan Merirai project and the construction of the seven-kilometre Jalan Tunoh to connect resettlement areas.

“The development of basic infrastructure is crucial to improve the well-being of rural residents before we move to the next phase, which is socio-economic development and increasing household income,” he said.

According to him, Sarawak has now been recognised as a high-income state seven years ahead of the target set by the World Bank, but efforts to further increase household income must continue.

To strengthen human capital development, Abang Johari said the state government will provide free higher education for eligible Sarawakians starting next year.

He also expressed his aspiration to make Kapit a pedestrian-friendly and eco-tourism city, based on recommendations from international planning experts from Norway, who see the potential of Kapit as a unique inland green city.

“With meticulous planning and its own identity, Kapit has the potential to become one of the best eco-friendly cities in the world,” he said.

He also expressed his appreciation to the local leadership, veterans, government agencies and the Kapit community for their continued support of the state’s development agenda.

On another matter, Abang Johari said his conferment of The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star by the Emperor of Japan is proof that the world recognises Sarawak’s progress.

“In other words, the world is beginning to recognise us – our development and our approach, especially in building a new economy based on renewable energy and sustainability. When that happens, it means the world will come to us,” he said, adding that he will leave for Japan next Monday to receive the award.
