GEORGE TOWN, Nov 5 (Bernama) — Investigation and monitoring works are ongoing to determine the cause of a sinkhole that formed on Jalan Dato Ismail Hashim in Sungai Ara, Bayan Lepas, near here yesterday.
Penang Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said the authorities are also identifying follow-up actions to be taken soon, as the incident has led to the temporary closure of the affected road.
“As an initial mitigation measure, plastic barriers have been installed, and traffic is being diverted through Jalan Sungai Ara 1, Jalan Persiaran Relau and Jalan Kedidi.
“Perbadanan Bekalan Air Pulau Pinang and Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) are on site conducting a comprehensive inspection of the pipeline systems under their supervision,” he said in a statement today.
The sinkhole, which appeared in front of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sungai Ara, measured five metres long, 3.5 metres wide and 1.9 metres deep.
