Batik Workshop Produces Banner for May 25 Peace Walk in Kuching

KUCHING, May 18: A six-foot-long peace-themed batik banner, symbolising unity and harmony, was created by participants of a batik workshop here yesterday.

The peace-themed banner will be carried during the upcoming HWPL 525 Peace Walk on May 25 here under the theme “Steps of Peace: Peace Walk for Unity”.

The workshop was facilitated by Within Arts Reach and jointly hosted by the International Peace Youth Group (IPYG) and 11 Ridgeway to offer a platform for participants to engage with the beauty and intricacy of batik-making — a traditional Malaysian craft recognised for its expressive patterns and meticulous use of wax-resist dyeing techniques.

The hands-on session focused on traditional batik-making techniques to promote awareness and appreciation of local crafts.

Participants were taught how to sketch original designs, handle various types of canting tools, apply basic colour theory, and use batik dyes to complete their artwork.

Adrienne Marcus Raja, facilitator and founder of Within Arts Reach, in sharing her motivation for organising the workshop, said: “I started this series of batik workshops to explore the art in a relaxed, personal space—where creativity flows without the pressure of perfection, new friendships form naturally, and some can revisit the batik they remember from school, while others discover it for the first time. I believe that every single art form should be encouraged to be accessible for those interested, and batik is no exception.”

Amelia Yeo, representative of IPYG, said although the number of participants was relatively small, the group hoped to continue hosting the workshop in the future for broader community participation and to further promote cultural appreciation and strengthen understanding of Malaysia’s rich heritage.

In a special show of support, the state assemblyman for N13 Batu Kitang, Dato’ Ir. Lo Khere Chiang, contributed a drawing to the batik banner to endorse the importance of preserving Malaysia’s traditional arts while supporting efforts to promote peace.
